Urgent: black mold found, kids coughing. Professional inspection needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I just found a patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Village Circle. We run the AC constantly but the room still feels damp. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold inspection, or can I handle this myself with bleach first?

Black mold with respiratory symptoms in children warrants immediate professional inspection. The dampness you describe, even with AC running, points to a humidity or condensation issue common in Dubai's climate. Your AC may be cooling but not adequately dehumidifying the space.

Do not use bleach. It is mostly water and can worsen the problem by feeding residual mold roots. It also fails on porous surfaces like drywall and only bleaches the visible color, making the mold temporarily invisible while leaving the colony intact. For a small, surface-level patch on a non-porous material like tile, a DIY scrub with distilled white vinegar can be a temporary measure. However, given the location (behind a wardrobe, suggesting hidden dampness), the black color (which can indicate species like Stachybotrys), and the health symptoms, this is beyond a surface cleaning issue.

The urgency is high due to the children's coughing. An inspection will identify the mold species through lab analysis to assess the health risk and, more critically, locate the moisture source. The problem is likely behind the wall—a small leak from the AC condensate drain line or plumbing, or condensation due to poor insulation. Simply cleaning what you see will not stop it from returning.

Professional remediation here involves containing the area to prevent spore spread, removing affected porous materials like drywall, rectifying the moisture source, and verifying removal success through post-remediation testing. For a situation with health impacts and hidden mold, a professional assessment is the necessary first step.
