Urgent black mold in bathroom: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed black spots starting to appear in the grout between the tiles near the shower. It’s been so humid lately that the exhaust fan doesn’t seem to be enough. Given how quickly this seems to be spreading, is this something I need to call a professional to handle urgently this week, or can I tackle it myself with a cleaning product from Day to Day?

Black mold in a Dubai bathroom is common due to our high humidity, but its urgency depends on the surface and spread. If the growth is only on non-porous surfaces like tile grout and covers an area smaller than one square meter, a DIY approach is often feasible.

For small areas, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and baking soda. Scrub the grout thoroughly. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Run your exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet walls. A squeegee is highly effective. If humidity persists, a portable dehumidifier can help.

However, if the black discoloration has spread to the ceiling, drywall, or behind baseboards, or if there's a persistent musty smell despite cleaning, it indicates a deeper issue. This is when professional assessment is recommended. In many JVC apartments, hidden moisture within wall cavities from AC condensation line leaks or poor bathroom sealing is a frequent culprit. Professionals use moisture meters and borescopes to find these hidden sources. Remediation becomes urgent if the mold is on porous materials or if household members experience worsened allergy symptoms. For verifiable results, a company with its own microbiology lab can identify the species and provide a post-remediation verification test.
