Urgent: Black mold in bedroom closet need pro immediately?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during my last deep clean a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have appeared quickly. Given how fast it showed up, is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately this week, or can it wait until the weekend?

It depends on the size and whether it's actively growing. A small patch (under one square foot) that appeared recently can often be managed by the homeowner if the underlying moisture issue is fixed immediately. However, given its location in a closet and the rapid appearance during humid weather, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the extent behind the walls.

The speed of its growth points to a significant moisture source, likely from high indoor humidity condensing on that cooler exterior wall or a small, hidden leak. In Dubai's climate, with AC units creating constant temperature differentials, condensation inside walls is a common, hidden problem. Simply cleaning the visible mold is ineffective if the moisture remains; it will return quickly.

For a closet, the risk of disturbing it and spreading spores is high when moving boxes. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aggravate the problem. Isolate the area by keeping the closet door closed until it can be assessed. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact moisture source and determine if the mold has spread into the drywall or insulation, which is a job for remediation professionals. The peace of mind from a proper diagnosis is worth the assessment cost.
