Urgent: black mold in closet from humidity, DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Al Barsha has been great, but ever since that heavy dew and humidity last week, we've noticed a few small black speckled patches in the corner of our master bedroom closet. The AC is running constantly, but the room still feels damp. How urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution first?

That damp feeling and visible black speckles signal a humidity issue, which is very common here in Al Barsha with our high dew points and AC units working overtime. The urgency depends on the size and source.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A vinegar solution can work on non-porous surfaces, but it won't kill all species. Bleach is not recommended as it can aggravate the problem. The key is not just cleaning the visible mold but addressing the moisture. Use a moisture meter to check the wall; levels above 17-20% indicate an active problem.

Given the location is a closet, the issue is likely poor air circulation from the AC or a small condensation leak from a duct. Running a dehumidifier in the room can help immediately.

However, if the patch is larger, if it returns after cleaning, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find the hidden moisture source, which is critical for a permanent fix. In Dubai's climate, a small visible patch can often be the tip of a larger, concealed issue within the wall or AC system if there's a persistent damp feeling. A professional assessment can determine if the underlying cause is a leak or simply requires adjustments to your ventilation and dehumidification strategy.
