Urgent black mold in Dubai villa: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It wasn't there during the last cleaning a month ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have exploded. Given how quickly it appeared, is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution this weekend?

Given Dubai's high humidity and the speed of its appearance, this likely indicates a hidden moisture source—possibly a small leak in the wall, condensation from an AC duct, or rising damp. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation of a larger problem within the wall cavity.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, a thorough DIY approach can be effective if you address the moisture source first. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Clean the area with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, not bleach, as it only removes the colour. Dry the area completely with a fan and a dehumidifier. However, given its location in a closet (a confined space) and its rapid growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the underlying cause, which is critical to prevent immediate recurrence. In many villas, this pattern indicates condensation from poorly insulated AC supply lines running inside walls. If the mold returns after cleaning, the area is larger than it first appeared, or you detect a musty odor, professional remediation is needed. Companies with their own microbiology labs can identify the species and provide targeted treatment protocols, which is particularly valuable for confirming the mold is not a more problematic type. |
