Urgent: Black mold in kids' room, can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and I’ve just spotted a patch of what looks like black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and we've had so much humidity lately. I'm starting to panic a bit – how urgent is it that I get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

The urgency depends on the patch's size and your children's symptoms. Small patches under one square meter can often be managed with immediate DIY action. Large or recurring growth, or symptoms like persistent coughing, warrants a professional assessment to identify the moisture source and mold type.

For a small patch, bleach is not recommended as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen airborne spores. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. A dehumidifier is essential to keep the room's humidity below 60% to prevent regrowth, especially during Dubai's humid summer months.

Given the wall is exterior-facing, the moisture source is likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the outside heat, or a minor leak. Simply cleaning without fixing this will cause it to return quickly.

If the coughs persist after cleaning or the mold covers a large area, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters to find the hidden source and can recommend remediation. For health concerns, a lab analysis of a tape-lift sample can identify the specific species, which is valuable information for your family doctor.
