Urgent: black spots from AC leak, clean myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for the past couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a few small black spots spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe. With the humidity creeping up again, I’m getting worried it's going to get much worse. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Address the leak first; that is the most urgent step. Turn off the AC unit to prevent further water damage and call your building's maintenance or an AC technician to fix the source. Until the moisture source is stopped, any cleaning is temporary.
For the existing spots, DIY cleaning with bleach is not recommended. It can lighten the stain but doesn't kill the root structure on porous surfaces like drywall, and the fumes are hazardous in a bedroom. A better DIY solution is a mixture of detergent and water, scrubbing the visible growth. However, this only addresses surface-level contamination you can see. Given the Dubai climate, with its high ambient humidity and year-round AC use, hidden mold growth inside the wall cavity is highly likely. The wall behind a wardrobe is a confined space with poor air circulation, creating a perfect microenvironment for rapid mold proliferation that you won't see. A professional inspection with a borescope can assess the extent of damage inside the wall. For health safety and to prevent structural damage, a professional assessment is strongly advised to determine if wall removal and remediation are necessary. |
