Urgent: black spots near AC vent, health risk?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making this weird damp smell for a couple of weeks now, and this morning I spotted a few small black spots around the vent on the ceiling. We’ve had the AC running constantly with the humidity lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. How quickly do I need to get a professional to look at this before it becomes a major health or repair issue?

That damp smell and visible black spots are classic signs of a mould issue in your AC system, and it's good you're addressing it. In Dubai's high humidity, AC units are prime locations for mould growth due to constant condensation. The health risk depends on the mould species, but common types found in AC systems can cause irritation like sneezing, congestion, and worsened allergies, especially for those with asthma or other respiratory conditions.

You should get a professional inspection within the next week. Mould colonies can spread quite rapidly in the enclosed, damp environment of AC ductwork, potentially leading to more extensive contamination and a costlier remediation process. The goal is to prevent it from spreading deeper into the system.

A proper inspection involves more than a visual check. A reputable professional will use a borescope to look inside the ductwork and often recommends surface or air sampling. This is sent to a microbiology lab to identify the specific type of mould, which is the only way to understand the actual risk level and determine the correct remediation protocol.

Until the inspection, you can reduce spread by avoiding using that specific AC unit. Wiping the visible spots with a damp cloth containing a diluted detergent solution can help, but this is only a surface fix; the main colony is likely inside the unit or ducts. Ensure your AC drain line is not clogged, as this is a frequent cause of moisture buildup. For a confirmed problem, remediation involves specialised equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments to address the source.
