Urgent: black spots near AC vent in humid Dubai« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing small black spots around the air vent in my bedroom. With this humidity, I’m worried it’s spreading fast. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner from the supermarket?

The damp smell and black spots indicate active mold growth, which is common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use. The AC unit's evaporator coil and drain pan create a cold, wet environment where mold thrives, and spores are then blown into the room.

This is urgent. The visible spots are just the fruiting bodies; the main fungal network is likely hidden inside the duct or on the coil. Supermarket cleaners only address surface stains and can agitate spores, making the problem worse. DIY attempts often fail to reach the contaminated interior and lack the antimicrobial treatments needed to prevent rapid regrowth.

Professional inspection is necessary. They will use borescopes to inspect the internal ducts and coil, identify the moisture source (often a clogged condensate drain), and perform the correct remediation. In Dubai, companies adhering to DHA and Dubai Municipality standards should provide before-and-after surface or air quality testing from an accredited lab to verify the results.

Until a professional arrives, run the AC fan mode continuously to keep air moving and reduce humidity, which can help slow the spread. Address this quickly, as prolonged exposure can worsen allergies and respiratory issues, especially for vulnerable individuals.
