Urgent: Building management or me for Dubai bedroom mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. It's a decent-sized patch that feels damp and has a really strong, musty smell.
How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, and is this something my building management in Downtown Dubai should cover, or is it on me?

This is urgent, especially with children coughing. The dampness and strong musty smell indicate active growth, which can release spores affecting indoor air quality and respiratory health. In Dubai's climate, hidden condensation from AC units or a small plumbing leak behind the wall is a common source.
You should notify your building management in writing immediately. Under Dubai's rental and strata laws, the structural integrity of the building and common services like plumbing are typically the owner's responsibility. Since the mold is behind a fixed wardrobe and likely linked to a wall or condensation issue, it may fall under their purview to investigate and repair the source. However, the cleanup of your affected personal property (the wardrobe) may be your responsibility. Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing it will aerosolize the spores. A professional inspection is critical to identify the moisture source—often a hidden leak or chronic condensation—and to assess the extent. They can also take a sample for lab analysis to identify the species, which is important for understanding potential health impacts and necessary remediation steps. For a situation of this size with health symptoms already present, a professional assessment is strongly advised. |
