Urgent: Can I treat apartment mold myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been really humid since the weather changed. I just pulled my winter clothes out of the master bedroom closet and noticed a bunch of small black spots on the wall behind the dresser and a few of my jackets have a musty smell. I'm worried it's spreading. How quickly do I need to get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can tackle myself this weekend?

Given the humidity in JVC and the musty smell on your belongings, this requires prompt attention. Small, visible spots on the wall often indicate a larger colony thriving in the wall cavity, fed by Dubai's high ambient humidity and condensation from AC units.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it with a vinegar or diluted detergent solution. However, DIY methods only address surface mold, not the moisture source or the root colony. The risk is dispersing spores and causing a wider spread if not contained properly. Given it's behind furniture and affecting clothing, the infestation is likely more established than it appears.

In Dubai's climate, where AC systems are the primary moisture source, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden humidity leak—often a clogged drain pan or poorly insulated ductwork—that is feeding the growth. A company with its own microbiology lab can also identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. For health safety and to prevent recurrence, getting a professional assessment is the most effective course of action.
