Urgent: damp wall and black mold causing coughs?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were rearranging furniture, and the wall feels damp to the touch. Is this something I need to call a specialist about immediately, or can it wait until next week?

Yes, this warrants immediate attention. Damp walls with visible black mold in Dubai's climate indicate an active moisture issue that needs addressing. The coughs are a legitimate concern, as mold spores can irritate respiratory systems, especially in children.

The dampness suggests a possible leak from plumbing within the wall or, more commonly in Dubai, condensation due to the extreme humidity and our constant AC use. When cold air from an AC unit meets the humid outdoor air seeping into poorly insulated external walls, it creates condensation inside the wall cavity—a perfect environment for mold.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach. Disturbing it will release a large number of spores. For a confirmed case like this, with dampness and health symptoms, a professional inspection is the right step. They will use moisture meters to find the water source and may recommend a lab test to identify the mold species, which determines the remediation protocol.

While waiting for the specialist, improve ventilation in the room by running an exhaust fan if you have one and keep the AC on to help control humidity. Move your children to a different room to sleep if possible. The remediation itself will involve fixing the moisture source, then properly containing and removing the affected materials.
