Urgent: DIY vinegar or call pro for black mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It wasn't there during my last deep clean a few months ago. With the humidity rising again, I'm worried it's spreading quickly behind the walls. Is this something I need to call a professional to handle urgently this week, or can I tackle it myself with vinegar?

The black patch you found requires immediate attention, but not necessarily panic. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can grow rapidly on organic materials like dust, cardboard, or even the wall itself if there's a hidden moisture source.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself. However, vinegar is often insufficient here. Use a solution of diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, scrub the area, and let it dry completely. Crucially, you must find and eliminate the moisture source. In a closet, this is often due to a nearby AC unit causing condensation, a small leak from an adjacent bathroom, or poor air circulation.

Given that it appeared suddenly behind boxes and you're concerned about spread, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside the wall cavity for a larger, hidden problem that DIY cleaning won't solve. Remediation companies with their own microbiology labs can also test to confirm the mold type, which dictates the correct removal protocol. For any recurring or widespread issue, professional remediation is the only way to ensure it is addressed at the source.
