Urgent: Handle villa closet mold myself or call proffesional?« Back to Previous Page
|
The master bedroom closet in our villa in Jumeirah has started to have a really strong, damp smell. I just pulled out some winter clothes I stored a few months ago and found a bunch of them, especially a leather jacket, have patches of black and green fuzzy mold on them. This has probably been growing since the weather started getting more humid. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution first?

Based on the fuzzy patches and strong damp smell, this requires professional assessment immediately. Fuzzy growth, especially in multiple colors, indicates active colonization that a surface clean won't resolve. The mold has likely penetrated the porous materials of your clothes and potentially the closet structure itself.
In Dubai's humidity, this level of growth suggests a persistent moisture source. It could be condensation from an AC duct running through the closet, a small plumbing leak in the wall, or moisture wicking up from the slab. A pro will use a thermal camera and moisture meter to find the source; without fixing that, the mold will return even after you clean. For your health and to save belongings, move the affected clothes outside to a sunny, dry area to prevent further spore spread in your bedroom. Do not attempt to clean the leather jacket with vinegar, as this can set the stain and damage the material. Professional remediation for contents involves specialized ozone or dry ice cleaning. Handling significant mold growth yourself risks inadequate removal and exposing yourself to a high concentration of spores. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for proper remediation to ensure it is handled safely and effectively. A certified inspector can identify the species and the extent of the problem, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. |
