Urgent: Is bedroom mold causing my wife's cough?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in the Marina has been feeling really humid lately, and I just pulled back the headboard this morning to find a patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall behind it. My wife has had a persistent cough for the last couple of weeks, and now I'm really worried. Is this something I need to call a professional cleaner for immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Black mould behind furniture, especially in a humid area like the Marina, is a legitimate health concern and could very well be contributing to your wife's persistent cough. The combination of high ambient humidity and cool AC walls creates a perfect environment for mould growth through condensation.

For a patch larger than one square meter, or in cases of pre-existing respiratory symptoms, Dubai Municipality guidelines recommend a professional assessment. An inspection would identify the moisture source—often a leaking AC condensate drain pipe inside the wall or poor external sealing—and the mould species. A lab analysis is the only way to confirm if it's the more problematic Stachybotrys (toxic black mould) or a more common, but still irritating, species like Cladosporium.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the air quality. For now, keep the area dry and well-ventilated. A certified professional can safely remediate the growth, rectify the moisture issue, and provide post-remediation verification to ensure the spores are measurably reduced and the environment is healthy again. Given the symptoms, I would not recommend waiting.
