Urgent: Is black mold in kids' room dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just discovered a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. We live in a villa in Mirdif and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. Is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can I handle it myself with a bleach solution this weekend?

Based on your description, the situation warrants immediate professional attention. The presence of black, fuzzy mold in a child's bedroom, coupled with persistent respiratory symptoms like coughing, is a significant health and environmental concern. The species commonly referred to as "black mold" (Stachybotrys chartarum) can produce mycotoxins that are particularly problematic for children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, potentially exacerbating asthma and causing allergic reactions.

The recent high humidity in Dubai is almost certainly a primary contributing factor. Our climate, especially during the summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold growth when combined with condensation from year-round AC use and potential minor, undetected leaks in villas. Attempting a DIY remediation with a bleach solution is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces, its fumes are hazardous to inhale, and it does not address the underlying moisture problem, guaranteeing the mold will return. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading them throughout the room and potentially worsening your children's exposure.

According to UAE health and safety guidelines, pervasive microbial contamination requires assessment and remediation by certified professionals. We recommend you cease use of the room and contact a specialist immediately.

At Saniservice, our certified mold inspectors conduct a comprehensive assessment using moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality sampling to identify the exact species and the full extent of the contamination, including within the wall cavity. Our remediation process then involves containment, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobial treatments to safely remove the mold and restore a healthy indoor environment. Please do not delay; for the health of your family, call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an urgent inspection.
