Urgent: Mold in AC unit affecting kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I’m starting to suspect it’s the AC unit in our villa in Al Barsha. I just pulled the vent cover off and saw what looks like black dust and a bit of fuzzy growth around the edges. Given how humid it's been, how urgently do I need to get a professional mold inspection done?

Given the visible growth and your children's symptoms, you should arrange a professional inspection within the next few days. The persistent high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai create ideal conditions for mold, especially in villa units that handle large volumes of moist air. The black dust and fuzzy growth you describe are strong indicators of an active colony.

For health-related concerns, especially with children involved, a visual inspection alone is insufficient. A proper assessment involves air and surface sampling to be analyzed by a microbiology lab. This identifies the specific mold type and its concentration, which is critical because some species common in AC systems, like Aspergillus, can cause more significant respiratory irritation than others. This data is what separates a genuine inspection from a simple cleaning service.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for indoor air quality, and a certified inspector will provide a report that aligns with these standards, giving you a factual basis for any necessary remediation. You can verify a company's credibility by asking if they provide documented, lab-certified results. In the meantime, try to limit your children's exposure to that room and consider running a portable HEPA air purifier if you have one.
