Urgent: Mold in baby's room need professinal cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It must have been there a while, but it’s gotten bigger since the recent humidity. My main concern is my newborn who sleeps in our room – is this something I need to get professionally cleaned like, tomorrow, or is it okay to handle myself this weekend?

With a newborn in the room, this warrants immediate attention but likely doesn't require an emergency call-out tonight. The priority is to stop your baby's exposure to airborne spores.

First, isolate the area. Keep the closet door closed and move any clothing or items away from the vicinity. Ensure the room is well-ventilated, but avoid using a fan in the bedroom itself as it can aerosolize the spores. Maintain your AC on a comfortable setting; consistent cooling helps control humidity.

Given the location in a Jumeirah villa and the recent humidity spike, this is almost certainly due to condensation or a minor, hidden water ingress. The mold behind the clothes grew because of reduced air circulation and the persistent high moisture levels we experience, even with AC running.

For a newborn's sensitivity, a professional inspection is strongly recommended over a DIY approach. While the visible patch might be small, the root cause needs proper diagnosis to ensure it's not part of a larger issue within the wall. Professionals can conduct moisture mapping and air quality tests to determine spore count levels in the room, which is crucial with an infant present. They will also contain the area during removal to prevent spores from spreading into your living space.

You can manage until the weekend by isolating the closet, but arrange for an assessment promptly. Look for a provider that offers a clear diagnostic process and can provide documented, post-remediation verification from an independent lab to confirm the space is safe.
