Urgent: Mold on clothes affecting air quality?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I’ve just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage room in our Jumeirah villa and noticed several jackets and sweaters have what looks like fuzzy black spots on them. The room itself has a really damp, earthy smell that wasn't there when we packed everything away last season.
How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and could it be affecting our air quality already?

Yes, this is urgent. Visible mold on clothes and a musty smell confirm an active growth, which means spores are already circulating in your air and likely affecting your indoor air quality. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can develop quickly in enclosed spaces like storage rooms, especially when items are packed away damp from winter humidity or AC condensation.
The damp, earthy smell indicates microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), which can cause respiratory irritation like coughing, particularly in children. Do not attempt to clean these clothes with household products, as improper cleaning can aerosolize more spores. Isolate the affected items in sealed bags until a professional can assess whether they can be salvaged with specialized cleaning. You need a professional mold inspection. The visible growth on your clothes is likely just the tip of the iceberg; the source is probably hidden within the room itself—perhaps in the AC unit servicing that room, behind stored items, or under carpeting. An inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the moisture source and take air samples to identify spore types and concentrations throughout your villa. This is critical, as the problem may have spread via your AC ductwork. Until the inspection, keep the storage room closed off, ensure your AC is running with clean filters to help reduce spore circulation, and increase ventilation in the rest of the home if outdoor humidity is low. |
