Urgent: Mold on curtains causing kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing on the back of our bedroom curtains. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I only noticed it a few days ago after I pulled the blackout curtains back, but it's spreading really fast. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, you should address this immediately. The rapid spread indicates high humidity and active growth, which can definitely irritate children's respiratory systems and cause that persistent cough.

In Dubai's climate, this is common on curtains, especially blackout types, because they trap cold air from the AC against the warmer room air, creating constant condensation and a perfect environment for mold. The first step is to move your children to a different room to reduce their exposure. For the curtains, remove them carefully to avoid spreading spores—roll them up with the mold facing inward and bag them for disposal. Wearing an N95 mask and gloves is advised.

Wipe down the wall and window frame behind where the curtains hung with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution to kill any residual mold. Before hanging new curtains, you must identify and correct the source of moisture. This is typically poor air circulation or an AC unit set at a very low temperature, causing excessive condensation.

Given the symptoms and rapid spread, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent and identify any hidden growth within the wall or AC system. They can perform surface and air quality tests to identify the mold species and spore count, which is crucial for understanding the health risk and ensuring the remediation is complete. This is not just a cleaning issue; it's an indoor environmental one that requires a diagnostic approach.
