Urgent: Mold under AC needs immediate professional help?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks, and I just pulled back the corner of the carpet to find a bunch of black and greenish mold on the concrete underneath. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and the humidity has been awful lately. Is this something I need to get someone to deal with immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, this requires immediate professional assessment and remediation. The combination of a persistent water leak from your AC and visible black/green mold growth on concrete is a significant indoor health concern. In Dubai's high humidity, this situation will not improve on its own and will almost certainly worsen.

The primary risk is that the mold colony, now established in the porous concrete slab, can release spores into your bedroom air. This often leads to increased allergy symptoms, respiratory irritation, and a persistent musty odor. Given the villa's construction and the UAE's climate, the moisture could also be wicking into adjacent walls, spreading the problem out of sight.

You should stop using that AC unit immediately to prevent it from adding more moisture to the area. Do not attempt to remove the carpet further or disturb the mold yourself, as this will aerosolize a high concentration of spores. Professional remediation is essential because effective treatment involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials (like the carpet and underlay), and using specialized techniques like HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments on the concrete to address the root colonization.

The process should conclude with moisture mapping to find the exact source of the AC leak and a post-remediation verification test, preferably from an independent lab, to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to a normal level. This comprehensive approach is the standard for resolving such infestations permanently.
