Urgent: professional mold removal or clean myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold removal company in to handle this, or is it something I can clean myself first?

Given the symptoms and the location, professional assessment is strongly recommended. Black mold behind furniture, especially in a humid climate like Dubai's, often indicates a larger moisture problem within the wall cavity that you cannot see. The persistent high humidity and year-round AC use can cause condensation and hidden dampness, allowing mold to thrive out of sight.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself using a diluted vinegar or bleach solution, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source. The coughing in your children suggests the mold may already be affecting air quality, potentially releasing spores into the room.

The urgency is high due to the health symptoms. In the UAE, remediation standards require not just cleaning the mold but identifying and rectifying the moisture source to prevent immediate recurrence. A professional inspection can determine the extent of the infestation behind the wardrobe and inside the wall. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the root cause, which is critical for a permanent solution. For health-related cases, a company with its own microbiology lab can also test the mold type to better understand the potential risk, though the presence of symptoms and visible growth is often reason enough for remediation.
