Urgent: Professional needed for fast-growing bedroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it seems to have appeared quickly. Given how fast it showed up, is this something I need to call a professional to handle urgently this week, or is it okay to try and clean it myself over the weekend?

Given the speed of its appearance and your location in a humid coastal area like Jumeirah, this likely indicates an active moisture source, such as condensation from an AC duct or a small leak. The rapid growth suggests conditions are ideal for proliferation.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a diluted vinegar or detergent solution, not bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and not the root structure. Scrub and dry the area thoroughly.

However, DIY cleaning is often a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved. The mold will almost certainly return. Given it's in a closet, the source could be hidden condensation within the wall or from the AC system, which is common here due to the constant cooling against high outdoor humidity.

A professional inspection is recommended to identify and address the root cause. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden dampness you can't see. Without fixing the source, remediation is ineffective. In Dubai, this is a frequent issue in villas, and proper diagnosis prevents recurrent problems and potential material damage.
