Urgent: Professional needed for JVC shower mold or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a ton of black mold underneath. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked last month. Given how quickly mold can spread here, is this something I need to get a professional to handle urgently this week, or can I tackle it myself with bleach over the weekend?

Given the extent of mold growth you've described under the sealant, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The high humidity in Dubai, especially in JVC apartments where ventilation can be limited, creates ideal conditions for mold to penetrate beyond surface level into porous grout and even drywall behind the tiles.

While a DIY approach with bleach might remove the visible stain on non-porous surfaces, it often fails to address the root moisture problem and can leave spores behind. Bleach also does not effectively penetrate porous materials. For a case where mold is hidden beneath sealant, the colony is likely more established than it appears.

A professional inspection can determine the full extent of the growth using moisture meters and borescopes. They will remove the contaminated sealant and grout, treat the underlying area with specialized antimicrobial solutions, and, crucially, identify and rectify the source of moisture—often poor bathroom ventilation or a hidden leak. The remediation should be followed by re-sealing with high-quality, mold-resistant silicone to prevent rapid recurrence, which is common in our climate. For health reasons, particularly if anyone has allergies or respiratory issues, having it properly handled is the safest course of action.
