Urgent steps for black mold and child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for a couple of weeks and I’ve just discovered what looks like black mold spreading along the bottom of the wall behind their bedroom dresser, probably from a slow AC leak. We live in a villa in Al Barsha and I’m really worried about their health. What’s the most urgent step I should take to handle this safely?

Move the dresser away from the wall immediately and restrict your children's access to that room. The most urgent step is to stop the moisture source; locate and fix that AC leak. In Dubai's climate, a constant drip from an AC unit creates the perfect humid environment for mold to thrive.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach or by scrubbing. Disturbing the mold will release a large number of spores into the air, which can worsen the coughing and respiratory irritation. For a spread of black mold, especially with active health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will perform a controlled assessment to identify the mold type and the full extent of the contamination, which is often hidden inside walls.

Open windows in other parts of the house to ventilate, but keep the affected room closed off. The coughing is a legitimate concern, as mold exposure is a common irritant that can exacerbate allergies and asthma, particularly in children. While the AC runs year-round, ensure your system's drain line is cleared regularly to prevent future leaks, a very common issue in villas here. A proper remediation will involve containing the area, removing contaminated materials like drywall, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air.
