Urgent to clean AC mold for health in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making this weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes every morning. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and green fuzzy spots. Given how humid it's been, how urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned before it becomes a serious health issue for my family?

Yes, this requires prompt professional attention. The combination of visible growth on the filter and your symptoms—stuffy nose and itchy eyes—strongly indicates the AC unit is actively dispersing mold spores into your apartment's air. In Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer, AC systems are a primary breeding ground for mold due to constant condensation.

For a situation with visible growth and occupant symptoms, a basic cleaning may not be sufficient. The mold on the filter is likely just the visible part; the internal evaporator coils and drain pan are probably also contaminated. A professional inspection is needed to assess the full extent. They can identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation method. Some types, like certain Aspergillus species common here, can cause more significant respiratory issues, particularly for children, elderly, or immunocompromised individuals.

Until a professional can address it, keep the AC unit turned off to stop spreading spores. Improve ventilation in the apartment by opening windows when outdoor humidity is lower, typically in the early morning or evening. Do not attempt to clean the internal components yourself, as improper methods can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. A proper remediation will involve specialized equipment to clean, disinfect, and dry the entire AC system to prevent immediate regrowth.
