Urgent to clean black mold in bedroom or DIY?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s been incredibly humid lately and that wall backs onto the bathroom. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and I'm worried it's connected. How urgently do we need to get this professionally cleaned, or is this something we can handle ourselves this weekend?

That black patch behind the boxes is a common issue here, especially on walls adjacent to bathrooms where hidden moisture can seep through. The recent humidity and your wife's stuffy nose are likely connected, as mould spores are a frequent irritant.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, a careful DIY approach can work. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area with plastic sheeting. Clean with a dedicated mould remover or a solution of diluted white vinegar, not bleach, which only discolours the surface. Scrub thoroughly and let the area dry completely with a fan. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. Check for a leaking pipe, AC condensation drain issue, or insufficient bathroom ventilation. However, given the location (a closet where items are stored) and the fact it's recurring from a hidden source, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact water intrusion point behind the wall, which DIY can't detect. In Dubai's climate, simply cleaning the visible mould without fixing the hidden cause guarantees it will return. If the patch is larger than a square meter, has a musty odour, or anyone in the home has respiratory conditions, skip DIY and get a professional assessment. They can also perform air or surface sampling to identify the mould species, which helps determine the appropriate remediation protocol. |
