Urgent to clean black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It wasn't there before the recent humidity spike, and now our whole room has a damp smell. How urgently do I need to get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

Black mold in a closet on an external wall, appearing after a humidity spike, strongly suggests a condensation issue from the temperature differential between the AC-cooled room and the hot exterior wall. The damp smell indicates active growth.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself this weekend. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted white vinegar solution. Dry the area completely with a fan. However, this only addresses the symptom. The underlying moisture problem will cause it to return unless identified and fixed.

Given the location on an external wall, the urgency for a professional is high. The mold you see is likely just the surface manifestation; the real concern is what may be growing inside the wall cavity, which you cannot access or clean yourself. A professional inspection with a borescope can assess the wall's interior for hidden growth and moisture meters can pinpoint the exact condensation source.

In Dubai's climate, this is a persistent issue. DIY cleaning is a temporary fix. A professional assessment will find the root cause—often inadequate insulation or a sealing fault—and provide a remediation plan that includes fixing the moisture intrusion, not just wiping the visible mold. This prevents recurrence and resolves the damp odour permeating your room.
