Urgent to fix AC mold or DIY with bleach this weekend?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last couple of weeks and I just pulled the curtains back to find a patch of black and green mold, about the size of a dinner plate, spreading on the wall behind it. With the humidity here, I'm worried it's going to get out of control fast. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray this weekend?

A professional inspection is urgent. In Dubai's climate, with constant high humidity and AC use, that leak has created ideal conditions for mold growth inside your wall cavity. The visible patch is likely just the surface manifestation.

Bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces like drywall. It only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, and the moisture from the spray can actually feed further growth. More critically, it does not address the ongoing water source from your AC leak.

The immediate priority is stopping the leak. A certified HVAC technician must repair the unit to prevent more moisture from soaking into the wall. Until the leak is fixed, the mold will continue to grow regardless of any cleaning attempts.

For the remediation itself, a dinner-plate-sized patch suggests significant moisture saturation. Disturbing it yourself risks releasing a high concentration of spores into your bedroom air. Professional remediation involves containment of the area, safe removal of affected porous materials (like the contaminated section of drywall), HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to address hidden growth.

In the UAE, reputable remediation companies follow standards like the IICRC S520 for mold remediation, which provides a verified protocol for this exact scenario. Given the scale and the fact it's in a bedroom where you spend hours sleeping, a professional assessment is the safest course of action to ensure it is resolved completely and your indoor air quality is restored.
