Urgent to fix black mold in bedroom or can wait?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall facing the outside. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. My main concern is whether this is something I need to deal with immediately or if I can wait until next week for maintenance to come look at it?

Black mold growth in a bedroom should be addressed promptly, especially in Dubai's high humidity. While not all black-colored mold is the notorious Stachybotrys, any active growth indicates a moisture problem that needs immediate attention to prevent it from spreading and potentially affecting air quality. Waiting a week could allow it to expand.

Your situation—a wall facing the exterior, worsening with humidity—strongly suggests condensation is forming inside the wall cavity, a common issue here due to the extreme contrast between air-conditioned interiors and hot, humid outdoors. This is not just a surface problem; the wall itself may be damp.

For a patch smaller than a square foot, you can carefully clean it with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture. Since it's in your sleeping area and has been growing for some time, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness within the wall, which is critical for a permanent fix. Proper remediation often involves identifying and rectifying insulation gaps or other building envelope issues that cause condensation.
