Urgent to get professional for black mold with baby?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black speckles forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s an interior wall and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC running constantly. My husband says it's nothing to worry about but I'm getting really anxious, especially with our baby sleeping in the next room.
How urgent is it that we get a professional to deal with this, or is it something we can handle ourselves with a bleach spray?

That sounds like a genuinely concerning situation, especially with a baby nearby. Given the constant damp feeling and the location on an interior wall, this is likely a condensation issue exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity, which creates a perfect environment for mold. While not all black mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, any active growth with a constant moisture source warrants attention.
With an infant in the home, it's prudent to treat this as urgent. Infants have developing respiratory systems and are more vulnerable to mold spores, which can cause or worsen allergies, congestion, and coughing. A bleach spray is not recommended; it only bleaches the visible colour and can push spores into the air, while the underlying moisture problem remains. It also fails on porous surfaces like drywall, where the roots remain. For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can identify the exact species through lab analysis to determine the specific risk and, more critically, locate the source of the moisture—whether it's a hidden pipe leak, insufficient insulation causing condensation, or airflow issues from the AC. Simply wiping it away yourself is a temporary fix. The remediation process should involve containment to prevent spores from spreading to other areas, including the baby's room, and addressing the root cause to prevent it from returning. |
