Urgent to hire pro for AC mold, or DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit for maybe two weeks, and I just pulled out some winter clothes to find a patch of black mold on the back wall and on a couple of jackets. We've had the humidity set low, but the leak must have made it worse. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, this situation requires immediate professional attention and is not suitable for a DIY bleach solution. The black mold growth inside a closet, fueled by a persistent AC leak, indicates a significant moisture issue that has likely been developing for some time.

In Dubai's climate, where high ambient humidity and year-round AC use create perfect conditions for mold, a small leak can lead to a major infestation. Bleach is highly ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and fabric; it only bleaches the visible surface mold without addressing the root hyphae (roots) deep within the material. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize harmful spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home.

A professional inspection is critical for several reasons. Certified inspectors, like those at Saniservice, use moisture meters and thermal imaging to identify the full extent of water damage and hidden mold growth behind walls. Air and surface sampling are then conducted to identify the specific mold species, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol, as some types like Stachybotrys (black mold) can produce mycotoxins. The remediation process involves containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, safely removing contaminated materials, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial agents—not bleach—to eliminate the colony at its source.

Given the potential health risks and the complexity of properly addressing the AC leak and resultant damage, I strongly recommend you contact a professional immediately. For a certified assessment and remediation plan, please call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
