Urgent to hire pro for bathroom mold or DIY bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bathroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing in the grout between the wall tiles near the shower. It’s been extra humid lately and the ventilation isn't great in there. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray?

Black mold in a bathroom grout is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. The urgency depends on the extent. For a small, surface-level patch confined to the grout lines, a thorough DIY cleaning can be effective.
Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner instead of bleach, as bleach only removes surface colour and does not kill the mold roots penetrating porous grout. Scrub vigorously, improve ventilation by running the exhaust fan longer, and use a squeegee on tiles after every shower to remove standing water. This addresses the moisture source. However, if the black discoloration persists after a proper cleaning, if it has spread to a large area (more than a few square feet), or if you notice it has started to appear on drywall or behind baseboards, a professional inspection is recommended. In villas, hidden moisture behind tiles can lead to structural issues. Professionals use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity. If the mold is more than just superficial, remediation by a certified company is the safest approach, especially with children in the home, to ensure spores are properly contained and removed. |
