Urgent to hire pro for closet mold, or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a patch of black mold, which I only spotted yesterday while putting away clothes. We’ve had the humid weather lately and I’m worried it’s spreading fast behind the clothes. How urgent is it that I get a professional mold removal company in to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a trip to ACE?

That's a situation that needs immediate attention, but not necessarily panic. Given Dubai's high humidity, especially lately, mold can spread quickly in confined, poorly ventilated spaces like a closet on an outside wall. The urgency for a professional depends on the size and cause.
If the patch is smaller than a standard A4 sheet of paper, you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. A solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product from a hardware store can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry. Crucially, identify the moisture source. It's often condensation from the AC or a small, hidden leak in the plumbing or building envelope. You should call a professional for an inspection if the mold covers a larger area, has returned after a previous cleaning, or if you discover significant moisture or water damage behind the wall. In many Dubai villas and apartments, mold on an exterior wall can indicate a more serious condensation issue or seepage that needs professional diagnosis to prevent recurrence. A proper assessment from a company with a microbiology lab can identify the species and the root cause, which DIY methods often miss. Addressing the source is the only way to ensure it doesn't come back. |
