Urgent to hire profesional for bedroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's been humid lately and I'm worried it's been growing there for a while, especially since my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. How urgently do we need to get a professional mold removal company in to deal with this, or is it something we can handle ourselves first?

The urgency depends on the size and type of mold. For a small patch (under one square foot) you've just discovered, a cautious DIY approach is possible. However, given the location in a closet (indicating poor airflow) and your husband's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess what you cannot see.
In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold growth inside wall cavities and under flooring, especially if there's a hidden condensation issue or a past, minor water leak. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg. For DIY, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the hard surface with a detergent solution, then wipe with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Dry the area completely and use a dehumidifier in the room. Discard any porous items (cardboard boxes, fabrics) that were in direct contact with the mold. If the mold returns within days, the area is larger than one square foot, or you smell a persistent musty odor, stop and call a professional. Their value is in using moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the moisture source and containment procedures to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the villa during removal. A reputable company will provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the space has been returned to a healthy baseline. |
