Urgent to inspect closet mold or clean with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in The Springs for two years and just noticed a few black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s been really humid lately and I’m starting to get a weird tickle in my throat when I’m in there. How urgent is it to get a professional mold inspection, or can I just clean it myself with bleach?

That throat irritation is your body reacting, and in Dubai's high humidity, that small spot is often just the visible part of a larger issue. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can actually feed the mold's root system, making the problem worse over time.

Given the climate and your symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended. The Springs' villas are prone to condensation issues, especially in closets on exterior walls where cool AC air meets warm, humid outdoor air. An inspector will use a moisture meter to find the source of the water intrusion, which is the only way to prevent recurrence. They can also take an air or tape-lift sample for lab analysis to identify the species, as some types common here are more problematic than others.

For a small, surface-level issue on a non-porous material, a DIY clean with a detergent solution can be sufficient. But since this is in a closet, likely on a porous wall, and you're already experiencing physical symptoms, the risk of improper handling and spreading spores is high. The urgency is moderate; you should address it within the next week or two to prevent it from expanding further into the wall cavity, which becomes a much larger remediation project.
