Urgent to inspect mold found in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’m starting to worry it’s more than just a cold. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs in our Mirdif villa and found a few jackets with fuzzy black spots on them. The whole space has that damp, earthy smell. How urgently do we need to get a professional mold inspection done?

Given the symptoms and visible mold in a confined space like that, you should schedule a professional inspection within the next few days. The combination of your children's persistent cough and the discovery of active growth on stored items indicates a potential indoor air quality issue that needs to be identified.

In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold in enclosed, poorly ventilated areas like under-stair cupboards. The damp, earthy smell confirms the presence of microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), a byproduct of active mold growth. This isn't just a surface problem on a few jackets; it's a sign of a moisture issue that has likely affected the structure and air within that closed space, which can then circulate through your home's AC system.

While not all mold is highly toxic, the type commonly found in such damp conditions here, like Aspergillus, can cause and exacerbate respiratory irritation, particularly in children. A proper inspection will involve more than a visual check; it includes moisture mapping to find the water source and air/o-surface sampling to identify the species and spore concentration in your living areas. This data is critical for any effective remediation plan to measurably improve your home's air and protect your family's health.
