Urgent to inspect mold in Dubai bedroom or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for about five years, and I've just noticed a patch of black spots growing along the bottom corner of the wall in our master bedroom, behind the wardrobe. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the room has started to smell damp. How urgent is it to get a professional mold inspection here in Dubai, or can I handle this with a DIY cleaner first?

That black patch behind the wardrobe is a clear sign of excess moisture, and given Dubai's recent high humidity and your villa's age, a professional inspection is strongly recommended over DIY.

The damp smell indicates active microbial growth, and what's visible is often just the surface manifestation. In Al Barsha villas, the source is frequently a combination of high ambient humidity and thermal bridging in external walls, where cold AC meets warm outdoor air, creating condensation inside the wall cavity. A DIY cleaner like diluted vinegar can remove the surface stain, but it will return if the hidden moisture source and any deeper colonization within the wall aren't addressed.

A certified inspector will use a borescope to check inside the wall cavity for hidden growth and a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact water source. This is critical, as the problem could stem from a minor plumbing leak, inadequate insulation, or even a compromised vapour barrier. They should also take an air sample for lab analysis to identify the spore types and concentrations in the room, which is the only way to assess potential health risks, especially since it's a bedroom.

For a situation with a persistent musty odour and visible growth in a living space, an inspection is urgent to prevent further structural damage and potential health issues. The Dubai climate makes this a systemic issue, not just a surface one.
