Urgent to professionally clean black mold or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for two years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It must have been growing slowly for a while, but I only spotted it yesterday when I was digging out a jacket. The recent humidity has been brutal. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself this weekend?

Black mold growth in a Dubai villa closet is common due to our high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The urgency depends on the size and your household's health. For a patch smaller than one square meter (about the size of a standard floor tile), a careful DIY approach may be sufficient. For anything larger, or if anyone in the home has asthma, allergies, or is immunocompromised, professional assessment is strongly recommended.
To DIY safely, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the gap with tape. Mix a solution of one part detergent and ten parts water, scrub the mold off the surface, and dry it completely. Do not use bleach, as it can damage porous materials and doesn't prevent regrowth. Discard any heavily contaminated porous items like cardboard boxes or fabrics. The critical factor in our climate is fixing the moisture source. This is often condensation from an AC supply duct running through the closet ceiling or a lack of airflow. After cleaning, improve ventilation, ensure the AC is set to a reasonable temperature to reduce condensation, and consider a portable dehumidifier for that room. If the mold returns quickly, covers a large area, or is inside the wall or HVAC system, a professional inspection is needed. They can identify the exact species and moisture source, which is vital for a permanent solution. In many cases, remediation companies use containment and air scrubbers to prevent spores from spreading to other home areas during cleaning. |
