Urgent to remove bedroom mold or DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's on the wall and it's been really humid lately. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and I'm worried it's connected. How urgently do we need to get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Professional inspection is recommended here, given the symptoms and location. The humid Dubai climate creates ideal conditions for mold, especially in closets on exterior walls where condensation can form. That black patch is likely just the visible part of a larger colony.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall; it only removes surface discoloration, not the root structure. For a small area, a DIY approach with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution is safer and more effective for porous materials. However, since the mold is behind boxes, it has likely been growing unseen for some time and may have penetrated the wall.

Your wife's stuffy nose is a significant indicator that this is affecting indoor air quality. Disturbing it incorrectly during cleaning can release a large number of spores, potentially worsening the problem and her symptoms. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source and assess the extent of the growth behind the wall. They will contain the area before remediation to prevent cross-contamination. For health-related cases like this, a lab test to identify the mold species is often advised to understand the potential risk.
