Urgent to remove bedroom mold with family present?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our master bedroom in our villa in Mirdif and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of a dinner plate, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. We’ve been sleeping in this room every night.
How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and can we stay in the house while it’s being handled?

This is a situation that requires immediate attention and professional remediation. Given the size of the patch (a dinner plate), its location under carpet (indicating a persistent moisture source), and the fact your family is experiencing symptoms, you should treat this as urgent.
Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize spores throughout your home, potentially worsening your children's coughing. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and constant AC use can cause condensation and hidden leaks, allowing mold to proliferate quickly behind walls and under floors once it has a foothold. A professional inspection is critical to identify the full extent of the moisture problem and the mold growth, which is almost certainly larger than what you see. Regarding occupancy, it is strongly advised that you vacate the affected room immediately. Sleep in another part of the house until remediation is complete. For families with young children or anyone with respiratory sensitivity, staying elsewhere during the actual remediation work is the safest choice to prevent exposure to airborne spores during the containment and removal process. A proper remediation will involve isolating the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure, safely removing the contaminated materials like the carpet and padding, HEPA vacuuming, and addressing the root cause—the AC leak. After removal, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space has been returned to a healthy condition. |
