Urgent to remove black mold behind damp wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were rearranging furniture, and the wall feels damp to the touch. Given how humid it's been lately, how urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a bleach spray this weekend?

Visible black mould with damp walls is a health concern, especially with children coughing. The dampness indicates an active moisture issue, which in Dubai's climate often stems from condensation from AC units or a hidden leak.

Bleach is not recommended. It can't penetrate porous materials like drywall to kill the root structure, and its fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces. More importantly, cleaning the surface mould doesn't fix the underlying moisture problem; it will return.

This situation warrants a professional assessment. The urgency is high due to the respiratory symptoms and confirmed dampness. A proper inspection identifies the moisture source (like a leaking pipe or thermal bridging) and assesses the extent of the mould growth, which is often more widespread than what's visible. They can also take samples for lab identification to confirm the mould type, as some species require more stringent containment during removal.

For a small, surface-level patch, you might manage with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution and improved ventilation after fixing the leak. However, given the described dampness and health symptoms, a professional evaluation is the safest course to ensure your home's air quality is restored.
