Urgent to remove black mold causing kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold that’s been growing in the corners of our master bathroom shower for a couple of months now. It’s a windowless bathroom in our Dubai Marina apartment, so it’s always a bit humid. I keep wiping it away but it just comes back darker and spreads a little more each time. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a strong cleaner from Ace Hardware?

Based on your description, this situation should be treated as urgent. The persistent black mold in your windowless bathroom, combined with your children's respiratory symptoms, is a significant health and environmental concern. The recurring growth indicates a deep-seated moisture issue that surface wiping cannot resolve.

In the high-humidity climate of Dubai, especially in areas like Dubai Marina and within a windowless bathroom, condensation and poor ventilation create a perfect breeding ground for mold. Air conditioning systems can sometimes spread mold spores from one room to another. The type of black mold commonly found in bathrooms (often Cladosporium or Aspergillus) is a known irritant and can exacerbate coughing, allergies, and asthma, particularly in children.

DIY cleaners from hardware stores are only a temporary fix. They bleach the visible surface but do not address the hyphae (roots) growing deep into the grout and behind tiles. This is why it returns darker and spreads. Aggressive scrubbing can also aerosolize spores, increasing inhalation risk.

For a permanent solution, professional remediation is essential. We follow strict protocols based on UAE health and safety guidelines, which involve containing the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, applying EPA-approved antimicrobial agents to eliminate the root system, and identifying the source of moisture to prevent recurrence.

Given the health symptoms present, I strongly recommend you cease DIY attempts and contact a professional immediately for an inspection and remediation. Please call our team at Saniservice on 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can assess the extent of the problem and ensure it is removed safely and completely to protect your family's health.
