Urgent to remove black mold in kids' room?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I finally checked behind their bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah Park villa. I found a patch of black mold about the size of a dinner plate on the wall, and I'm panicking. It's been so humid lately and I'm worried the AC isn't keeping up. How urgently do we need to get this professionally removed, and is it safe for them to sleep in that room tonight?

A patch that size with occupants showing symptoms requires immediate professional assessment. The high humidity in Dubai creates ideal conditions for mold, and wall colonies often indicate a moisture issue the AC cannot manage alone, like a small leak or condensation within the wall cavity.
For tonight, it is not safe for them to sleep in that room. Move them to another well-ventilated space and keep the bedroom door closed to prevent spore dispersal. Do not attempt to disturb the mold by spraying it or wiping it, as this will aerosolize the spores. Professional remediation is urgent, ideally within the next few days. In the UAE, look for a company that follows IICRC S520 standards for mold remediation. The process must include containment of the area, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, safe removal of contaminated materials, and—critically—identification and rectification of the moisture source to prevent rapid regrowth. A post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly safe. |
