Urgent to remove black mold on outside wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, but it's on the wall that faces the outside. The humidity has been so intense lately that our clothes feel damp. I'm worried it's spreading behind the wall. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

The black mold on your outside wall is a symptom of a condensation problem, which is extremely common in Dubai's climate. The high outdoor humidity is meeting the cold wall surface cooled by your AC, creating a perpetual damp environment mold thrives on.

For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself, but never use bleach. It’s mostly water, which feeds the mold, and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. Use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner, scrubbing the area thoroughly. However, this only addresses the surface.

The urgency for professional assessment is high because the mold you see is likely just the tip of the iceberg. If your clothes feel damp, humidity in that wall cavity is severe, and growth behind the drywall is almost certain. Spores from hidden colonies will continue to affect your indoor air quality and spread.

DIY cleaning is a temporary fix. A professional inspection identifies the moisture source—often insufficient insulation on that external wall—and uses thermal imaging to map the extent of hidden growth. The remediation then involves controlled removal of affected materials and addressing the root cause to prevent immediate recurrence, which is a certainty if only the surface is cleaned. Given the location and your description of dampness, this is a case where a professional diagnosis is strongly advised.
