Urgent to remove black mold on wall for allergies?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Al Barsha, and it's been really humid lately. I'm worried it's making my husband's allergies worse. How quickly do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can clean myself first?

Given the location on an external wall in Al Barsha and your husband's allergy symptoms, this should be addressed promptly. The recent high humidity creates ideal conditions for mould growth, especially on cooler external walls where condensation can form behind furniture.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mixture of white vinegar or a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to scrub the area. Thoroughly dry the wall afterwards with a fan. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source. In Dubai's climate, the core issue is often penetrating damp from outside or condensation from the temperature differential between the AC-cooled interior and the hot, humid exterior. Simply cleaning the surface will likely result in the mould returning if the moisture problem isn't solved. Because the mould is already affecting health, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the exact moisture source—whether it’s a minor condensation issue or something more significant requiring repair. A proper assessment will determine if the mould has penetrated the wallboard itself, which would require removal and replacement. A company with a microbiology lab can also identify the mould species, which helps in understanding potential health risks and the required remediation protocol. For health-sensitive cases like this, a professional approach that guarantees the spores are properly contained and removed is the most effective long-term solution. |
