Urgent to remove black mold or clean myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were rearranging furniture, and it’s in a pretty big patch on the wall. With the humidity lately, I’m really worried it’s spreading.
How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can clean myself if I act this weekend?

Black mold growth behind furniture is a common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The urgency depends on the size and cause. For a large patch you've just discovered, especially with occupants experiencing respiratory symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.
A patch larger than one square meter, or any growth causing health effects, should not be a DIY project. The primary concern is identifying and fixing the moisture source—this is the critical step most DIY efforts miss. In our climate, the source is often a hidden condensation leak from an AC pipe within the wall, a leaking joint, or capillary rise from a compromised damp-proof course. Without resolving this, the mold will return quickly. Improper cleaning can also aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination to other rooms and worsening your family's exposure. A professional inspection will use moisture meters and borescopes to find the water entry point and assess the full extent behind the wall. They can then safely contain the area during removal and verify with post-remediation testing that the spore count has been returned to a normal level. Given the symptoms you describe, this is the most reliable path to ensuring your home's air is healthy. |
