Urgent to remove kids' bedroom mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for a couple of weeks, and I finally checked behind the wardrobe in their bedroom and found a large patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. How urgently do I need to get this professionally removed, and can we stay in the house while it’s handled?

Yes, this situation requires prompt professional assessment and remediation, especially given the children's symptoms and the visible growth. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the villa's construction can create ideal conditions for mold behind furniture where air circulation is poor.

With ongoing respiratory symptoms in children, it's advisable to have the mold identified. While not all black-colored mold is the notorious Stachybotrys, its presence cannot be ruled out without a lab analysis. A professional inspection will determine the extent of the growth, which is often more widespread than what is visible on the surface.

For a patch larger than one square meter, professional remediation is strongly recommended. DIY attempts can disturb the spores and significantly increase airborne contamination throughout the house. The family can typically remain in the home during remediation if the affected area is properly sealed off with containment barriers and negative air pressure machines, which a certified remediator will set up.

The urgency is high to both stop the children's exposure and address the moisture source, which is likely condensation from the AC system or a hidden plumbing leak. A proper fix involves locating and correcting that moisture issue first, then performing the removal, followed by verification that the spore count in the room has returned to normal levels.
