Urgent to remove kids' bedroom mold or DIY okay?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I finally checked behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. I found a pretty large patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall, probably from the humidity. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this now. How urgently do I need to get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

A professional inspection is strongly recommended before any DIY attempt, especially with children's health symptoms present. The coughing could be related to mold exposure, and improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, making the problem worse.

In Dubai's climate, hidden condensation behind furniture on exterior walls is common. The patch size and its link to a humidity source mean the issue is likely more extensive than what's visible. A proper inspection identifies the moisture source—often a leaking pipe, AC condensation drain issue, or capillary rising damp—which must be fixed first, or the mold will return.

For a patch under roughly one square meter, a thorough DIY cleaning with proper precautions is possible. You must isolate the area, wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves, and use a detergent solution, not just bleach. However, given the health symptoms and the likelihood of hidden growth, a professional assessment is the safer choice. They use containment, HEPA filtration, and can take samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type and verify it's been removed. The priority is identifying and stopping the moisture intrusion; without that, any cleaning is temporary.
