Urgent to remove kids' bedroom mold or DIY with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last few weeks and I’ve just discovered a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. Our villa in Jumeirah is pretty old and I know the humidity has been awful lately. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Given the location in your children's bedroom and their persistent coughing, this situation requires immediate and careful attention. While the mold you see might not be the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), its presence indicates a persistent moisture problem, and any mold can produce irritants and allergens that exacerbate respiratory issues, especially in kids.

In Dubai's high humidity, DIY cleaning with bleach is often a temporary fix. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration on non-porous materials but does not kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating porous surfaces like drywall or wood. It can also aggravate the problem by adding moisture. For a small patch (under 1 square foot) on a non-porous surface, you can carefully clean it with a detergent solution while wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given that it's behind boxes in a closet—a classic spot for hidden, sustained dampness—the wall material is likely compromised.

The urgency stems from your children's symptoms and the villa's age, where hidden condensation within walls is common due to constant AC use creating thermal bridges. A professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source (e.g., a leaking pipe, external water ingress, or condensation) and assess the full extent. They can perform air and surface sampling to identify the species, which informs the remediation strategy. Proper remediation involves containing the area, removing contaminated porous materials, HEPA vacuuming, and addressing the humidity source, often with dehumidification. For health verification, post-remediation testing by a third-party lab is the standard.
